Dr. Phil's trip to Haiti!
I had the opportunity to go to Haiti in October 2008 for 2 weeks with Christian Veterinary Mission. The purpose of the trip was two-fold:
First, our group of 5 veterinarians and 1 medical doctor provided some help to the Haitians after being devastated by 3 major hurricanes hitting the country over 6 weeks this fall. Because the people use trees to make charcoal to cook their meals, the country is cleared of 95% of their forests. This has resulted in much erosion and loss of homes, families, animals and crops after these major storms. We stopped in a tented refuge village to offer the people medical support, water and picks and shovels to clean up the devastation in their village of Caberet.
The main purpose of our trip was to give practical training to Haitian veterinarians who graduated from veterinary school in Cuba within the last 3 years. Prior to these 100 new graduates, Haiti had only 4 vets working in the country, which is the size of Maryland. These veterinarians were guaranteed a job working for the government for 1 year after graduation. The worked for about $120 per month. After that time they were on their own to support themselves. Each of the CVM veterinarians mentored a group of 5-6 Haitians. We showed them exam and various treatment skills for cattle, goats, pigs and horses. Also, we gave them practical training in surgery skills using dogs and cats as our patients. We are hoping and praying that these skills will enable these veterinarians to be able to supplement their income enough to make a living in this very poor country.
Another part of the trip was a visit to an orphanage in the capital city of Port au Prince. Babies or children who are born with physical or mental handicaps are often given up or abandoned because they are a burden on the families. The orphanage we visited had 12-14 children from infant to 12 years old. We spent time coloring and playing games with the children while holding them and encouraging them. This was my favorite and most heartbreaking part of the trip. Just seeing those little ones, so disabled, yet so thankful for any attention, brought tears to my eyes and broke my heart. I wished I could bring them all home.
This was my third trip to Haiti over the last 20 years. The highlight of my trip was renewing relationships with people who I have met on past trips and making new friends. One special connection that I have is with the wife and children of my friend Feneus. Feneus was a young man, unmarried, and very eager to learn the skills of a veterinary technician when we first went to Haiti in 1985. Feneus and I spent a lot of time going out in the country side together, him learning about veterinary medicine, and translating the work we did distributing pigs to the rural farmers. Over the years Feneus got married and had two children. Unfortunately he died of AIDS a few years ago, and our family has been supporting his widow, Josette and their two children as much as feasible. So, it was special that I was able to visit with her and the kids on this trip. One of the children has a rare form of MD, and has special needs.

Bay View Veterinary's Annual Dog Wash!
Bay View Veterinary Clinic held its 7th annual Dog Wash this year on July 26th. We had lots of good "clean" fun washing a total of 82 dogs! All proceeds from this year's event were donated to the Wisconsin Humane Society & Wisconsin Humane Education Funds.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this year's Dog Wash a success! Please click here to view photos of this year's event as well as photos from previous years.
Ear and Skin Workshop!
On May 30th, Bay View Vet hosted an Ear and Skin workshop. Dr. Phil explained how and why ear problems occur as well as the treatment and diet needed to maintain healthy ears and skin.

Greg Hoover from IVX Animal Health discussed the products Dr. Phil suggests. It was a free fact-filled presentation with lots of samples for everyone to take home and try on their pets. Check back soon for more upcoming workshops!
Phil and Kathy's Trip to Honduras!
Recently Phil and Kathy had the opportunity to be part of a team from the Christian Veterinary Mission that went to Choluteca, Honduras. CVM was invited to this part of Honduras to see what the animal needs are in the more remote and less developed mountainous region around Choluteca, whose population is 100,000.
While there, Phil and Kathy were able to participate in the vaccination of cattle as well as teach about mastitis, obstetric procedures, diarrhea and other diseases common to cattle. In addition to their veterinary work, CVM was also able to interact with the local children. They brought school supplies including crayons, coloring books and reading books.
